Disability case management is a collaborative team process linking an employer with workers, labour union representatives, and service providers to prevent disability or to minimize its impact through early intervention, support, and resource coordination, optimizing recovery, and facilitating prompt, but also safe and sustainable return to work.
When done well, disability case management enhances workplace relationships. As a collaborative process, it brings people together and increases communication and teamwork. Successful programs promote a caring and respectful workplace environment.
The objectives for this process are cost containment for employers, compliance with legislation, skilled worker retention, and support to the workforce, especially those with chronic health conditions and the aging.
Efforts to return a worker to work are most successful in the early part of the absence, because the longer someone is away, the less likely it is they will return. Efforts to bring workers back as quickly as possible are critical and foundational to disability management; it begins with early identification of those who require intervention to reduce or eliminate obstacles to their recovery and return to work before they occur.
